Christmas Thoughts
I know, however, that God is still on His throne and nothing will not come my way in this life that He has not ordained. What happens to God's people in this life happens for a reason, and one must be prepared to deal with it accordingly. I pray God will strengthen my faith and grow me in His grace as I face the days to come, whatever they may bring. I pray that 2011 would be a year of prosperity and blessing for all. Thanks be to God who gave the greatest gift of all, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Chrome OS
As the days went by I began reading reviews of the new computer by people who had received their free machines and followed the Chrome OS story. This was even more evidence to me I would not receive the test hardware. Then, lo and behold, on December 15, 2010, UPS delivers a package to me from a Brian Jeffries in Kentucky. Guess what? Yep....what Google calls the CR-48 netbook with the Chrome OS had arrived! I couldn't believe it at first....I never win free stuff.
Time to start playing with my new toy. First some background. I have a 4 year old desk top with Windows XP and a new HP laptop with Windows 7 at home and a new Dell desk top with Windows XP (supposed to have Win 7) in my office at work. These are the 3 systems I am comfortable with and know the best.
The keyboard is definitely different! I have read it is similar to a 2006 Mac Book Air. I'll take their word for it...I've never owned a Mac. Where the caps lock key is on most keyboards, you will find a search key. All the F function keys are gone and have been replaced with such things as refresh, back, forward, dim screen, brighten screen, mute, volume up and down. There is no delete key.
The most amazing thing about the CR-48 is its start up time. Even with my new HP laptop, from the time I press the power button until it is ready for use a full minute can go by. Since this new netbook is totally web-based, there are no local programs and other software to load as it boots up. This puppy is ready to go from a cold start in 7 to 10 seconds! This is one of the big selling points. Also, when you open it from sleep mode, it is ready to go, instantaneously.
So far it's a fun little machine to play with. Some problems I have experienced: The flash player crashed while using it on two different websites at the same time. The video was jerky (frame drop out?) when I changed to full screen mode on a Vimeo video, and one You Tube video was jerky, even without switching to full screen. I am also noticing some lag with the loading of some pages, like my iGoogle page where all my news, weather, etc. are located.
I've only had the CR-48 for three days, so there is a lot more testing yet to do, but I am enjoying it. I believe there is a future for this technology, especially if the price is right. If they would sell these units for $100 or less, it would shake up the industry.

Thoughts on Playing Music
It does not get any easier as our current group deals with its own set of challenges. It's the great love of music and God that brings us together. We usually have a wonderful time when we are able to congregate and make music. With our little praise and worship band logistics can be a problem. Our members are scattered across central North Carolina and it is difficult to get everyone together. Add to that the family and career responsibilities, except for Sundays, we rarely are able to rehearse and learn new music. The good thing is this makes our times together enjoyable and precious. On many Sundays it is even difficult to get the whole group together. If we had more consistency we could really hone our craft. We will attempt to work on these challenges as we hope to soon establish a regular monthly practice, separate from the weekly Sunday morning rehearsal before each worship service.

The Difference Between Hymns and Praise Songs
An old farmer went to the city one weekend and attended the big city church. He came home and his wife asked him how it was.
"Well," said the farmer, "it was good. They did something different, however. They sang praise choruses instead of hymns."
"Praise choruses?" said his wife. "What are those?"
"Oh, they're OK. They are sort of like hymns, only different," said the farmer.
"Well, what's the difference?" asked his wife.
The farmer said, "Well, it's like this - If I were to say to you: "Martha, the cows are in the corn"' - well, that would be a hymn. If on the other hand, I were to say to you:
'Martha, Martha, Martha, Oh Martha, MARTHA, MARTHA, the cows, the big cows, the brown cows, the black cows the white cows, the black and white cows, the COWS, COWS, COWS are in the corn, are in the corn, are in the corn, are in the corn, the CORN, CORN, CORN.'
. . .Then, if I were to repeat the whole thing two or three times, well, that would be a praise chorus."
The next weekend, his nephew, a young, new Christian from the city came to visit and attended the local church of the small town. He went home and his mother asked him how it was.
"Well," said the young man, "it was good. They did something different however. They sang hymns instead of regular songs."
"Hymns?" asked his mother. "What are those?"
"Oh, they're OK. They are sort of like regular songs, only different," said the young man.
"Well, what's the difference?" asked his mother.
The young man said, "Well, it's like this - If I were to say to you: 'Martha, the cows are in the corn' - well, that would be a regular song. If on the other hand, I were to say to you:
'Oh Martha, dear Martha, hear thou my cry Inclinest thine ear to the words of my mouth turn thou thy whole wondrous ear by and by to the righteous, inimitable, glorious truth.
For the way of the animals who can explain? There in their heads is no shadow of sense. Hearkenest they in God's sun or His rain unless from the mild, tempting corn they are fenced.
Yea those cows in glad bovine, rebellious delight have broke free their shackles, their warm pens eschewed. Then goaded by minions of darkness and night, they all my mild Chilliwack sweet corn have chewed.
So look to the bright shining day by and by, where all foul corruptions of earth are reborn; where no vicious animals make my soul cry and I no longer see those foul cows in the corn.'
. . Then if I were to do only verses one, three and four and do a key change on the last verse, well that would be a hymn.

God is the Responsible One
I feel this way at my job sometimes. I grow weary of being the manager and would rather someone else make the decisions. Whether spiritual or material, there is freedom in submitting. One can then focus on submission and obedience.

The Shape of Society
I thought Halloween, at best, was a time for kids to dress up and collect candy. The growth in adult participation in the "holiday" speaks to the fact that our society is regressing. No one wants to grow up it seems. Many people want to live in perpetual childhood.
Maybe I am making much ado about nothing. Nevertheless I believe it is a sad state of affairs.

They Went Out From Among Us
(Hebrews 3:12-14 ESV)
I know of an individual who, after many years in the church, one day decided he was an agnostic, turned his back on regular church participation, and announced he was a "student of theology". Is this someone who "pretended" to be a believer for many years and finally grew tired of the charade, or a true child of God fighting a spiritual battle within who will eventually return to the fold? I am not his judge, so I don't know. I have my own problems when it comes to doubt and assurance. I do know I can look to the scriptures and get some answers:
[19] They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us.
(1 John 2:19 ESV)
Does this verse apply to our friend mentioned earlier or is he just not doing a good job of "[holding] our original confidence firm to the end"? This opens another can of worms because at first read this passage seems to suggest that a believer can "keep" himself saved. Of course only the Lord has the power to keep his children and the gospel of John makes this clear:
[28] I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. [29] My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand.
(John 10:28-29 ESV)
Any thing we do in this endeavor can only be accomplished through the power of the Holy Spirit, so in the end, it is God who performs it. We must serve Him as best we understand the Word, depend on Him for strength and guidance and leave the results to Him.

Seasons of Doubt
And where do I turn to get the encouragement I need in times like these?...the Word of God, of course. John the Baptist also had his doubts. Read Luke 7:
[18] The disciples of John reported all these things to him. And John, [19] calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?” [20] And when the men had come to him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?’” [21] In that hour he healed many people of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and on many who were blind he bestowed sight. [22] And he answered them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them. [23] And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.”
(Luke 7:18-23 ESV)
Sometimes as Christians look back at biblical history, we tend to put the people of that time on a pedestal. John the Baptist was not super human. He could not tell the future. He only had the revelation that God saw fit to reveal to him up to that point in time. We must take what God has given us, and, by faith, go on to believe and serve Him. He will encourage us and strengthen our faith through His Word and His people. I like the last verse of the passage..."blessed is the one who is not offended by me." If we hang in there and not turn our backs on our Savior, a blessing awaits. Furthermore, I believe God will not let His TRUE followers turn their backs on Him. That's what is known as "perseverance of the saints".
For me personally, I have to be in the Word everyday. If you don't eat, you'll starve.

A Rebellious People
And now, go, write it before them on a tablet and inscribe it in a book, that it may be for the time to come as a witness forever. For they are a rebellious people, lying children, children unwilling to hear the instruction of the LORD; who say to the seers, "Do not see," and to the prophets, "Do not prophesy to us what is right; speak to us smooth things, prophesy illusions, leave the way, turn aside from the path, let us hear no more about the Holy One of Israel."--Isaiah 30:8-11
It may not be a direct warning to America, but the principle is definitely applicable. The wisdom and insight found in the word of God is there to help, guide, and direct us. It is not just good words written down on paper either. The word is living and is the power of God unto salvation. Listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit before it is too late.

Dealing with the Enemy
"If favor is shown to the wicked, he does not learn righteousness; in the land of uprightness he deals corruptly and does not see the majesty of the LORD. O LORD, your hand is lifted up, but they do not see it. Let them see your zeal for your people, and be ashamed. Let the fire for your adversaries consume them."--Isaiah 26:10-11
We are free in Christ to live the life to which He has called us, and He will fight and defeat the enemy of His people.

God Will See Us Through
all day long an attacker oppresses me;
[2] my enemies trample on me all day long,
for many attack me proudly.
[3] When I am afraid,
I put my trust in you.
[4] In God, whose word I praise,
in God I trust; I shall not be afraid.
What can flesh do to me?

Pet Peeve of the Day
Time now for “Pet Peeves” or “Things that Really Tick Me Off”. On any road or highway of at least four lanes width, the inner or left lane is considered the passing lane. In other words, in theory, faster traffic uses this passing lane while slower traffic uses the right lane. So why is it almost every morning on my daily commute to work I am stuck behind someone in the “passing” lane who obviously wants to travel slower than me? The only logical answer I can come up with is that most of these individuals have a left turn in their future and I assume they feel the need to stake a claim on the inner lane miles before their destination. I am looking for a left turn myself, but I travel at the posted speed limit or just above. Of course they are moving at 10mph less than that or slower. Do I pass these NASCAR experts on the right? No, I patiently ride their bumpers until they make that inevitable left turn or until I reach my destination…whichever comes first. Call it stubbornness or insanity, but in the left lane I stay!

It Works Both Ways
In regards to this mosque near Ground Zero controversy…
Yes, America is a country where individuals are allowed to practice their religious freedom. However, I am not being intolerant when I say that once someone else’s faith crosses a certain line, as in imposing their beliefs on me or blowing up people…then we have a problem and it is time to push back. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” is what it is all about and most rational human beings will agree with this “Golden Rule”. I think it is naive to believe that there are not those within the Muslim faith who are bent on the destruction and/or conversion of everyone else to their way of life. We must remain vigilant as to what is happening around us in this free society in which we live.

Tea Party Kind of Guy
In the times in which we live, I feel it is important for me to get involved in some way and stand up publicly for what I believe concerning the direction in which my country, the United States of America, is heading. The Tea Party stands for principles we have gotten away from in government and I believe that merits my support, whatever it is worth.
I know this might be an unpopular move with some of my friends and acquaintances, but so be it. This is something I believe in strongly and I must do. I hope to share more substantive thoughts on future blogs.

More Random Thoughts
Lady Ga Ga?.....should be Loser Gag Gag. Maybe by this time next year, she will be irrelevant even to the oatmeal-brained drones who like her and believe she actually has talent.
Liberalism is mental illness...unless they're just kidding. Just watch one evening of MSNBC and you'll see my point (the term "oatmeal-brained drones" also applies to this context).
I'm sorry....soccer, or football, as the rest of the world calls it, is BORING!
It's not that I'm an old geezer...there really isn't any good new music being made these days (except for a few exceptions) like there was thirty and forty years ago. Just ask a YOUNG music lover who has half a brain...they will agree with me.
I wish musicians would keep their political views to themselves...if they must express it, put it in a song. I understand they are entitled to their opinion, but why do the idiots in the media ask for these opinions as if these artists are experts in fields other than their own?
Where did the term "politically correct" originate? It should be renamed "insanely stupid" or "stupidly insane".
All the previous statements in this post to some degree illustrate the fact that the end of the world, as we know it, is imminent.

Random Thoughts
Has anyone noticed, besides me, that Murphy's Law is in full force in our country? Even the Anointed One in DC is having a hard time keeping his halo shiny.
People can play games with words all day long, but "illegal" still means "ILLEGAL".
Maybe it's time we pull our resources out of foreign conflicts and the domestic "war on drugs" and start defending our borders.
I am tired of politicians playing games and using disasters, such as the Gulf oil spill, to advance their agenda and seek to gain more control over the American people(that would be us).
